Designing Heating and Cooling Systems in Large Buildings

Have you ever wondered what goes into a heating or air conditioning system for a large office building or another large building like a mall or a school? My name is Evelyn, and I am an HVAC architect. I design heating and air conditioning systems for large, corporate buildings. Making sure that a large building with many rooms or offices is efficiently heated and cooled is a very large job and is much more complicated than simply heating or cooling a home. This blog will educate the reader on how heating and cooling jobs this large are designed and completed.

Serious Sounds From Your HVAC System You Shouldn't Ignore

Nicole Jacobs

If you have an HVAC system, you need to become familiar with how it sounds when it is operating normally. That way, if your HVAC system suddenly starts to make a strange noise, you will notice it right away and get the assistance you need to take care of your system.

Serious Sound #1: Hissing

If you hear a hissing sound, like you have an angry cat somewhere in your home, that means that you have some sort of leak in your system. It could be a leak in the ductwork, allowing air to escape before it makes its way through your vents, which can decrease your unit's efficiency and operating capacity. Or it could be a refrigerant leak, which left unaddressed, will leave you without cool air.

Serious Sound #2: Clicking

When your system turns on and off, you may hear a single clicking sound when it turns on and off. However, you shouldn't hear a repeated clicking sound when your unit is operating. That generally means that a moving part inside the system is misfiring or not working properly, which you are going to want to address immediately.

If you hear the clicking sound inside of your home, it may also be the thermostat, which can start to click when it gets old and malfunctions.

Serious Sound #3: Buzzing

Another concerning sound is a buzzing sound. A buzzing sound may mean that your air filter needs to be cleaned or replaced. If the air filter is in good shape, a buzzing sound can mean that you have a broken part somewhere that is vibrating and creating a buzzing sound. It could also mean that you have a loose wire or that the fan blades are unbalanced. The most serious issue that can make your unit buzz is a refrigerant leak.

Serious Sound #4: Banging

A banging sound is something you should take very seriously. Usually, you will hear a banging sound when a part is loose and is hitting against other components inside the unit. The most common parts that become loose are the motor or the blower. You don't want these important parts to be banging around loose inside your unit; you are going to want to get them fixed right away.

If your HVAC unit starts to make strange sounds, such as banging, clicking, buzzing, or hissing sounds, don't ignore those sounds. Instead, call in a professional air condition service to assist you with fixing things up and getting your unit running smoothly.
